Last night Skepta launched his much-awaited Nike Air Max 97 collab, aka SkAIR. It’s never been rare to spot Skepta donning a pair of Air Max when kicking about London or performing on stage (just check his Instagram, he’s been wearing them for years), so who better to collaborate with Nike to celebrate the silhouette’s 20th birthday than the King of Grime himself?
A$AP Rocky and J Hus were among the crowd of people who came to celebrate the release of the shoe that’s inspired by 1999’s Air Tuned Max. Skepta’s custom-designed 97s come in a rust and black colourway, served with a slight iridescent sheen, inspired by both Skepta’s home-from-home Morocco and his beloved London.
To celebrate the reinterpretation, Nike and Skepta are hosting Sk: ON AIR; an event that sees South London’s railway arches transformed into a Morroccan-souk-cum-London-market. Skepta has hand selected a series of market vendors he personally admires for their independent spirit and DIY mentality. Think fresh hair cuts by “Hollywood John” (Skepta’s legit barber), nail art from the girls at WAH, a clothing customisation workshop with Ryan Hawaii, bespoke jewellery from Seattle Gold, flower merchants straight off Columbia Road and market stalls offering a SK AIR mobile phone unlocking service, whilst flogging every plastic phone fascia you’ll ever need. Meanwhile the menu consisted of Moroccan vendors serving tea and traditional eats.
The space had a sense of community and a carnival-like energy that are part of the inspiration behind the shoe, as well as a snapshot of the lifestyle and people Skepta surrounds himself with. Last night’s event was captured by Places + Faces for Amuse, whilst tonight Nike and Skepta invite the public to experience Sk: ON AIR, or to tune in live to listen to performances by the likes of Stefflon Don, Spyro and Ms Banks, live on Rinse, Reprezent, The Beat and Radar radio.
