Hainan Island in the South China Sea is a luscious tropical outpost on China’s most southern tip. Think year-round balmy weather, golden beaches, mountainous forests and only a short flight (1.5 hours) from Hong Kong, it’s no surprise this place is China’s answer to upstate New York. Sanya, a bit on the south coast of the island, is home to Yalong Bay – where you’ll find beach clubs, pools and palm trees – as well as hot springs and the Nashan Temple. It’s also home to a new Ian Schrager conceived hotel, The Sanya EDITION.
Built on it’s own private beach, the hotel is a tropical oasis inspired by the Summer Palace and home to rare indigenous wildlife, like Madagascar Almonds, Birds of Paradise, Foxtail Palms and Rangoon creepers. Sleep in one of the outdoor cabanas – architectural pavilions made from teak and canvas – and wake up in the exotic surrounding of China’s tropical south.
