London-based singer, Jorja Smith has been performing since she was eight years old. Now 19, she’s amassed a catalogue of songs spanning genres from soul to pop, including the insanely catchy “Blue Lights”. Last week, in time for International Women’s Day, Jorja Smith dropped her new tune “Beautiful Little Fools” – a call to arms for young women everywhere. “I feel as young girls grow up, they’re slightly tainted by what the media says is ‘beautiful’ and I feel like my song can be a little help to them,” says Smith. “We are all beautiful in our own individual and special ways.”
Amuse caught up with Smith to find out about a few of the women who’ve inspired her and why.
“I grew up listening to her. This woman made me feel so many different emotions through her lyrics and voice. You can believe every word in her songs. Her honesty and realness inspired me a lot to write.”
“A woman who never gives up. ‘I’m no longer accepting the things I cannot change, I’m changing the things I cannot accept’. I’m very inspired by her powerful mind and determination to stand for what was right. Through my music I’d like to make a change to how people view certain things. Beautiful Little Fools is an example of me giving my views of ‘Beauty’ hoping it may change the way people see them selves and what they believe is beautiful.”
“She raised me and taught me to love and be myself and follow my dreams. One of the most hardworking women I know. She is a jewellery designer and her passion in creativity is so beautiful to see. Her determination to work for herself and achieve what she wants as well as raising me and my brother is wonderful. Infinite thank yous to her.”
