Popcaan’s Guide to Jamaica

We caught up with the King of the dancehall on smoking and homecooked food

Popcaan is a country-boy. Born-and-raised in the lush green hills of Saint Thomas Jamaica. But up until today (due to visa issues) the dancehall king has never been to the UK. With the rising interest in dancehall, with Rihanna’s Work sweeping the airwaves, a co-sign from Drake on the summer hip-whinin’ anthem Controlla – he couldn’t come to the UK at a better time. This Friday he’ll be battling against UK grime heavyweights Eskimo Dance, UK G All Stars (a super-group made up of UK garage’s crème de la crème) and Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang at Red Bull’s annual Culture Clash.

Amuse caught up with the Love Yuh Bad singer and discussed his homeland: “My favourite place in Jamaica is Saint Thomas y’kna, it’s where I was born and where I grew up. And Portmore, I love it there.” He says. “This place called Bath Fountain in St Thomas, it’s where the water falls from the rocks and its hot. It’s a very famous place up in the hills, so when you go to Jamaica you go to Bath Fountain.”

Up until last week, the soundclash king ran a weekly clash battle called Unruly Clash Wednesdays, where local youths could come through and battle it out. Despite holding it down for the kids, he doesn’t actually like to go out, “I don’t really party too much. I like fi nice and chill, relax and smoke. That’s my party.”
